About once a week, Jerica Montez has to make an unwanted appointment with a BART station agent—when she’s trying to exit the fare gate and her ticket is rejected with a stern “See Agent.” The 19-year-old SF State interior design student can’t seem to avoid it, nor can many commuters. Each day, BART officials receive an average of 250 complaints for demagnetized fare tickets, and now they are doing something about it.

Many SF State students rely on BART and the school’s free shuttle service, which departs from the Daly City station, to get them to classes. Commuters should notice improvements by this fall, said agency spokesman Linton Johnson. It’s all about having as few headaches as possible. A happy customer is priceless. Riding the BART should be relaxing and we are trying to make it as stress-free as possible.

High coercivity magnetic strips—the kind used on most credit cards—will be less prone to being erased as the low coercivity ones used on current tickets. Users have found that they can be damaged with a simple contact to a magnetic jewelry clasp on a purse or when pinned against an MP3 player or cell phone in a pocket.

“At least once a week it happens,” Montez said. “My wallet has a magnet on it—you think I would learn, but I don’t.”

“It used to happen to me all the time, and then I stopped putting [the ticket] in my pocket with my cell phone,” said Oliver Scotting, 23, a graduate student in biology at SF State.

While Scotting figured out the cause of his ticket being demagnetized, for some riders a demagnetized ticket remains an awkward surprise.

“I don’t even know how it happened,” said Virak Yin, 26, grad student at SF State, who was surprised last Thursday when his ticket was rejected by the gate machine for the first time. “They were cool about it, took it and fixed it.”

David Dunand, James N. and Margie M. Krebs Professor of Materials Science and Engineering in Northwestern University's McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science, has teamed up with Boise State University professor Peter Müllner and McCormick postdoctoral fellow Vee Boonyongmaneerat to create a foam from a nickel-manganese-gallium alloy (Ni-Mn-Ga) that changes shape when exposed to a magnetic field. The new foam could translate to smaller, lighter pumps and more aerodynamic airplane wings.

When exposed to a magnetic field, a single crystal of the Ni-Mn-Ga alloy will deform approximately 10 percent. The alloy then retains its new shape when the field is turned off but returns to its original shape if the field is rotated 90 degrees. That's what scientists call “magnetic shape-memory.”

But most materials are “polycrystals,” consisting of a collection of randomly oriented crystals, making a patchwork similar to marble. In polycrystals each individual grain moves in a different direction when exposed to the magnetic field, and the overall deformation is cancelled such that the alloy ends up not moving at all.

Single crystals are extremely expensive and time-consuming to make — just like single-crystalline gems — so when Dunand and Müllner met at a conference in 2006, they decided to combine Müllner's knowledge of magnetic shape-memory materials with Dunand's knowledge of metallic foam. They hoped a polycrystalline foam of the alloy, which looks like a sponge, would allow more space for individual crystals to move, retaining properties similar to a single crystal.

That just left the burning question: Would the foam change shape?

To find out, Dunand shipped the foam to Boise State where Müllner and his student Marcus Chmielus tested the foam in a magnetic field rotation. Though it didn't move the 10 percent that a single crystal would, it did move 0.12 percent.

”It was very exciting because we went from zero to an actual value, albeit small, but comparable to the best competitor,” Dunand said.

That competitor is Terfenol D, another material that also moves magnetically under a different mechanism. That material, which has been around for a long time and is expensive to make, is already maxed out at 0.12 percent deformation.

Dunand thinks that once the Ni-Mn-Ga foam is optimized — through casting it differently or perhaps heat-treating it differently — it will provide better results. He believes that such a foam could be a lighter, cheaper replacement for Terfenol D applications like sonar, actuators and magnetomechanical sensors. Dunand also believes the foam could replace applications that require small, rapid movement, like very small motors that don't have room for normal motor components like rotors, stators, gears and shafts, possibly for biomedical applications.

The material could have even bigger applications. Dunand said it's possible that the foam could eventually be used to control slight changes in the shape of airplane wings to make them more aerodynamic based on the speed of the aircraft.

“The dream or the goal is to be able to change, ever so slightly, the aerodynamics of the flow of air to make the flight more efficient at all speeds,” he said.

So you want to sell your jewelry? Well, selling jewelry wholesale is a big business, and you definitely need a catalog of your offerings! Making a catalog isn’t as difficult as you might think. First, you have two options:

  1. Online Catalog
  2. Print Catalog.

Online Catalog is the least expensive way to advertise your jewelry wholesale company – but with all of the online jewelry stores and online wholesalers, it may not be the most effective way to make sales. A print catalog should strongly be considered for a direct mailing.

If you make your own jewelry, you will need to get good pictures of the jewelry. You can take these pictures yourself with a digital camera, or have a professional take the photographs. It is cheaper to do it yourself. Load the pictures up onto your computer, and use publishing software, such as Microsoft Publisher to design and layout your catalog. This may take a little time and patience, but it is much cheaper than having someone else do it.

This will cost money, especially since the pages need to be glossy and in color, and the catalog will need to be bound, but this expense will be well worth it if you will be doing a mass direct mailing.

In order to do a mass direct mailing, you simply find a reputable company who either sells mailing lists or does the mailing for you. You can actually request lists of mailing addresses where the person has expressed an interest in purchasing wholesale jewelry or any other criteria that you set. In most cases, it is best to have the company handle the mailing for you. They will get the best rates on the mailing because they can use the bulk mail rate.
